Research and development project „Kommunikation hoch 2/In Between“

The applied research and development project In Between (Agriculture, Nature Conservation & Communication) starts in January 2024, has a duration of three years, includes a 65% doctoral position as well as additional funds, and is funded by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (FKZ 3523851100; Communication hoch 2). It continues the BfN project "Communication Problems between Agriculture and Nature Conservation in Germany and their Causes" (AckerKom) at the departments of "Communication Science, especially Online Communication" (Prof. Schweiger) and "Communication and Consultation in Rural Areas" (Prof. Knierim) (information and publications).

The applied research and development project “Dazwischen” (Agriculture, Nature Conservation & Communication) includes a 65% doctoral position as well as additional material resources. The project aims to improve the challenging public dialogue between stakeholders in agriculture and those involved in nature conservation, environmental protection, and climate protection. For various reasons, it is unrealistic to hope that both sides will reach a constructive, fair, and consensus-oriented balance of interests in public discourse. A more promising approach appears to be supporting journalists and publicists (e.g., interest-driven influencers) in their reporting, in mediating between interests, and as factors in shaping public opinion. However, their communication is often one-sided and characterized by a lack of technical, social, and communicative competence. The project therefore develops programs for journalists and publicists that address these shortcomings, at least in part. These programs will then be implemented, evaluated, and, ideally, established on a long-term basis. The programs to be developed focus on teaching and disseminating relevant skills and content in journalism and media studies, as well as on fostering networking among stakeholders from journalism/media studies, agriculture, and nature/environmental conservation.
